Magnifique! Juste une question, c'est quoi la pièce de monnaie à côté de la tortue?

Re: Mes Pelusios niger ssp.
Lol, oui mais Manimanu est Québecois, il ne connait peut-être pas l'€uro. C'est une pièce de 1 €, un peu moins large qu'un quarter de $ US ou CA, pour la taille comme le dit delphine.
What a beautifull specie. Did you obtain some eggs, hatchings, etc. I know that it is your project but today?
Thank you for all this fabulous pics. Pelusios niger is not common in France, not at all lol. I saw about 10 specimens at "La Ferme Tropicale", 4 or 5 years ago. Today we need an autorisation to keep them ("dangerous specie" for our legislation)

Actually Pelusios niger is very uncommon in whole Europe. I am also the ESF studbookkeeper (www.studbooks.org) for Pelusios species and I have just about 15 specimens in the studbook, from all over Europe. It is quite strange that Pelusios niger is considered dangerous as it is a very relaxed species. Are turtle keepers not united in France, going against rules and laws or trying to change them?
Re: Mes Pelusios niger ssp.
Not really against but totally accross lol. I think that nobody know really how to change this. French legislation is pratically caduque because sanctions are really rare concerning turtles ... This is one of many many aberations ...
In France Pelusios niger is considered as dangerous because bigest specimens have a jaw larger than "n" mm (I forget the number), as many others (Apalone, Chelydra, etc.). The "Certificat de capacité", needed to keep this species legally, is difficult to obtain, and conditions of obtention are variable between regions ... typically french.
In fact, like in whole european countries as you said, othe Pelusios species than Pelusios castaneus are very rare. I don't go everytime in "La Ferme Tropicale", but in 7 years I saw less than 10 Pelusios sinuatus, Pelusios carinatus and Pelusios castanoides castanoides, and ten thousandss Pelusios castaneus and Pelomedusa subrufa subrufa. In France, Trachemys (and ALL North american emydidae) are all forbiden (implantation in ours ecosystems) so Pelomedusinae replace it ...
I hope you understood me, english is not my friend ... lol

This is why we need CDC to keep it in France...

That's hypocritical of the France lawmakers. Every turtle can bite, and I think that the bite of a very large Orlitia will do more damage than a bite of an adult P. niger.
Besides, the biting was provoked by me as I was feeding the turtle some turtle-gelatine food by hand. the turtles just "missed" the food and accidentaly bit my finger.
There was not much damage to my finger. Every dog or cat would do more damage....

I agree.
This is just due to the fact is larger than an "empirical" 4 cm. I don't want to imagine consequence of Orlitia's bite, particularly "well" (if I can say... lol) placed on a swimmer...
Re: Mes Pelusios niger ssp.
Actually I see my Pelusios nigers as the least aggressive ones. Pelusios carinatus, P. castaneus and P. castanoides are way more aggressive feeders than P. niger.
Re: Mes Pelusios niger ssp.
Hey,
very nice pic Ferry. Your male has a very big head, awesome specimen.
Thanks for sharing, hope everything is working as you want now.

Re: Mes Pelusios niger ssp.
I just caught my female in the act of depositing eggs... This is going to be a very good weekend.
Re: Mes Pelusios niger ssp.
I just dug up 7 eggs of Pelusios niger. The female barely reaches 17 cm SCL. The eggs however are quite big, measuring about 39.5 x 22 MM., weighing 10-12 gr.
However, the strange thing about the eggs is that they were all buried in quite shallow depth, in comparision to P. castaneus and P. carinatus. I also noted that the eggs of P. niger lack the slimy, later polverous, layer which is typical for castaneus and carinatus eggs.
And together in the incubator with some hatchlings P. carinatus.
