Ancient Pelomedusoides
Just showing of some of my drawings I intent to use in an article I'm writing for the journal TRIONYX of the Dutch-Belgian Turtle Society.
The article shows the enormous variety in skull shape and size with the extinct relatives of the Pelomedusidae and Podocnemididae.
And the shell of Cordichelys antiqua.
Enjoy the pics....

...and Taphrosphys sulcatus.
Re: Ancient Pelomedusoides
Oh damn !
I can't read Dutch... too bad for me. It won't be available in English ?
Otherwise, congratz for your new artworks. Do you use some kind of "pattern" to make these draws ?
Oh and, you still did not check the sex of my Castaneus lol.
Could you check it out please ?
Thanks for the sharing Ferry !

All drawings are redrawn from other works of Gaffney et al., yet are done in such a way that lay-people can understand them better. The shell drawings are done in my own style, giving them a more natural appearance.Otherwise, congratz for your new artworks. Do you use some kind of "pattern" to make these draws ?
I work with Illustrator and Photoshop.
Oh yes I did...Oh and, you still did not check the sex of my Castaneus lol.

A lighter coloured specimen yes, yet not looking like a true Senegal/Mauritania type.

Well, here you are....
To be included in my article: Pelusios niger.
Re: Ancient Pelomedusoides
Oui. Skulls of Pelomedusa subrufa and Pelusios castaneus will be used too, as does the skull of Podocnemis unifilis.skwateur a écrit:
Is that a P.Niger skull ?

skwateur a écrit:Hmm okay.
Why are some part colored with different colors ?
To indicate the different bones that make up the skull.
Re: Ancient Pelomedusoides
O_o
too many bones !
I have a question Ferry, I've read one of your post and you were talking about Pelomedusidae and Pelomedusoid, what's the difference ?
Pelomedusidae = Pelomedusa + Pelusios and
Pelomedusoid = pelomedusidae + Podocnemididae ?
too many bones !

Hmm okay..
Most of the species you've mentionned are no longer present right ? (Araripemydidae, Euraxemydidae, Brasilemys, Hamadachelys and Bothremydidae)
Never ever heard of them :o

Right, they are indeed extinct families.
If you are really interested in turtles, you should take in mind that if you want to know the present, you should first know the past. In other words: extinct turtles.
Trust me, you have not even the slightest idea of the enormous variety and distribution of turtles in the past.
Let me show you 2 extinct turtles with quite an unusual appearance...
Sinemys gamera
Ninjemys owenii
