Re: Mes Pelusios castaneus
The final headcount remains 5 live hatchlings. Some had died a few days before hatching, and 2 eggs hadn't developed. I blame myself for the bad hatching rate..having allowed the humidity in the incubator to change too much...
Two days ago I cleaned and stored away the incubator.
Egg 1-> hatched 7 february
Egg 2-> hatched 6 february
Egg 3-> infertile
Egg 4-> infertile
Egg 5-> hatched 6 february
Egg 6-> †
Egg 7-> †
Egg 8-> hatched 6 february
Egg 9-> †
Egg 10-> hatched 7 ->†
Egg 11-> egg exploded 5 february ->†
Egg 12-> hatched 9 february
However, yesterday evening, entering the turtle room to put out the lights, I caught one of the other females in the act...again...
Diggin'....
The first eggs were found quite near the surface, very strange for a Pelusios castaneus, that normally deposit their eggs quite deep....
The first batch produced 7 eggs....
Followed by another 6, fresh eggs. However,...under the last egg of the nest lay a suprise............
At the depth of nearly a foot, there was another nest!!!
The eggs of the second nest are quite bulbous, having expanded probably due to high humidity in the sand...
With the possibility of the eggs already having started developing, they were placed in exact the same position in the substrate of the incubating box.
...and 4 more....
The underlaying nest had 6 indented/ripped eggs,..unfortunately...
Just stored away two days ago, and today back in action, full action that is... the incubator filled up to the notch....
